Mines Martial Arts Club (MMAC) is a student-run organization dedicated to helping foster individual and community growth through martial arts, STEM fields, and community engagement.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to offer the best martial arts education and internationally recognized certification possible. Our curriculum is individualized to personal ability without prejudice, in order to develop the mind, body, and spirit. We offer classes in the traditional Korean martial arts of Taekwondo, Hapkido, Kumdo & Kumbup, as well as self-defense classes to SDSM&T students, staff, faculty and alumni.

We provide belt promotion testing, tournament, demonstration, workshop, and community engagement opportunities to club members.
We help support campus safety by offering free self-defense workshops throughout the school year.

Students in this class will focus on building physical, mental, and emotional health through traditional and contemporary martial arts training. We apply a variety of workout routines to help the student achieve their goals. Students will learn kicking, punching, and practical self-defense techniques and philosophies that will help develop their body, mind, and spirit. This class is a mixed gendered and multi-level class that encourages individual student development tailed to individual needs. This class follows a belting system.

President - Mr. Mason Rud

Mr. Mason Rud is the President for MMAC and is a Kukkiwon certified 2nd Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo, a Cchung Ryoung Hapkido Federation red belt, and a 3rd Gup in Kumdo & Kumbup. He began his martial arts career in 2015 under the direction of 5th Dan Master Instructor Devon Waldron with Alliance Taekwondo. Currently, Mr. Rud trains under 4th Dan Master Instructor Naomi Even-Aberle and is working on his B.S. in Computer and Electrical Engineering.
Vice President - Ms. Hannah Moen
Ms. Hannah Moen is the Secretary for MMAC and is a Kukkiwon certified purple trim belt in Taekwondo. She began her martial arts career in 2018 through MMAC, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the School of Mines.
Treasurer - Mr. Oliver Juhl
Mr. Oliver Juhl is the Treasurer for MMAC and is a Kukkiwon certified purple belt in Taekwondo. Mr. Oliver started his martial arts in elementary school and then picked it up again upon while attending SDSM&T. He is currently a junior Computer Science major.
SDSM&T Advisor - Dr. Brent Deschamp
Dr. Brent Deschamp is the SDSM&T Advisor for MMAC and has studied Shaolin weapon forms, Xingyiquan, and Taijiquan (Yang and Chen styles) for twenty years. He has studied Chen-style Xinyi Hunyuan Taijiquan under the direction of Master Yang Yang for the past seven years, including the Essential 48 form, Pao Chui form, and Grandmaster Feng's saber form. Dr. Brent Dechamp has taught in the Mathematics department at SDSM&T since 2010.
Martial Arts Advisor - Master Naomi Even-Aberle
Master Naomi Even-Aberle is the Founder and CEO for Full Circle Martial Arts Academy in Rapid City, South Dakota. She is a Kukkiwon certified 4th Dan Master Black Belt in Taekwondo, a Cchung Ryoung Hapkido Federation 4th Dan Master Black Belt, and a 1st Dan Black Belt in Kumdo & Kumbup. She began her martial arts career in 2006 under the direction of 6th Dan Master Instructor Nathan Schutz.
